Event Overview

The regulatory response to market turmoil of the past 12 months is still evolving. However, it is clear that there will be a wholly new approach by the authorities to financial regulation, the supervision of financial institutions and the stability of the financial system as a whole.  This one day seminar in Helsinki brought together market experts, regulators and infrastructure providers to address the latest developments in financial market infrastructure and the OTC markets, both in the Nordic region and in a broader European context, to illuminate not only detailed measures that the market can expect but also outstanding issues that remain to be resolved.

One of the new regulatory measures, anticipated in 2010, is a new EU Clearing and Settlement Directive, which it is hoped will improve efficiency and costs in cross-border clearing and settlement in Europe.  A panel on the forthcoming Directive considered its likely provisions and impact on post trading infrastructure.  A second panel explored OTC market developments, particularly in light of the European Commission’s recently completed consultation on possible initiatives to enhance the resilience of OTC derivative markets.

This seminar was presented as a joint initiative from the Nordic Capital Markets Forum and the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) with the support of Pohjola Bank.
