Quick Find:
Financial Markets Foundation Course (FMFC)

Attending the course will help you understand:
  • They key players in the financial markets (issuers, investors and intermediaries)
  • The structure of the FX market
  • The difference between the long-term and short-term debt markets
  • The key features of equity products
  • The interaction between cash and derivative markets

Course background

The FMFC is a first level (introductory) qualification intended for anyone entering into a career in the financial markets.  It does not assume any prior study or work experience other than a general knowledge of mathematics such as basic algebra and statistics.  For anyone without that quantitative background, pre-course reading with a further bibliography is provided to allow candidates to acquire that knowledge directly.

The programme is intended to provide ‘breadth of knowledge’ to make it relevant to people pursuing careers in the front office, middle office and operations areas.  The course places an even emphasis on introducing and explaining the key concepts of each subject area and then developing practical knowledge and skills of each area.  This reflects the fact that it is both introductory, requiring the introduction and explanation of key concepts, but also intended for market practitioners requiring applied thinking.

Who should attend?

The FMFC is intended to be relevant to a wide range of job functions and areas; anyone who would benefit from an understanding of markets, participants and products, and how they all come together.  Candidates will come from organisations involved in both the buy-side and sell-side of the industry plus insurance, accounting, IT firms supporting the industry and the financial press.
The course is open to ICMA members and non-members.

Programme Recognition

This is an accredited course under the Solicitors Regulation Authority (formerly The Law Society's) CPD Scheme. Solicitors may claim 14 hours CPD credit for their attendance of the whole course.

Course Content and Format

The FMFC syllabus is organised around three broad subject areas with a final review session to consolidate the learning ahead of the exam:

  1. Overview of Financial Markets
  2. FX
  3. Debt Markets
  4. Equities
  5. Derivatives

There is a two hour multiple choice exam on the afternoon of the third and final day of the course.
