Our Commitment to Sustainability at the 57th ICMA AGM & Conference
ICMA is committed to embedding environmentally responsible practices into every aspect of our events calendar, and the 57th ICMA AGM & Conference is no exception.
Location Selection: Why Frankfurt?
As in previous years, we’ve chosen a location that helps us reduce the overall environmental impact of the conference. Frankfurt is one of Europe’s most accessible cities, offering a range of low-carbon travel options for attendees across the region.
While we recognise that some delegates may arrive by air, we encourage the use of rail and other lower-impact transportation wherever feasible. For those flying, we recommend considering carbon offset options through trusted providers, such as:
🌱 Getting to Kap Europa from Frankfurt Airport – The sustainable way
Upon arrival in Frankfurt, we recommend using the city’s efficient public transport network, including regional trains, S-Bahn, and U-Bahn services.

🟢 Sustainability Notes
Frankfurt’s public transport runs on 100% green electricity provided by RMV, contributing to reduced emissions.
Avoid taxis or ride-hailing unless necessary, as trains and trams are quicker, cheaper, and lower carbon.
Sustainable Event Venues
Kap Europa – Conference & Welcome Reception
Kap Europa, our primary venue, was the first convention center in Germany to receive Platinum Certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). It is a benchmark for green architecture and sustainable operations. To learn more, please visit Kap Europa’s website.
Gesellschaftshaus im Palmengarten – Gala Reception
Our gala venue is nestled in the 22-hectare PalmenGarten botanical garden, home to over 13,000 plant species. The Gesellschaftshaus is not only a beautiful heritage space, but also a leader in sustainable hospitality:
- The kitchen emphasises plant-based, regional, and organic cuisine.
- Their culinary philosophy follows a strict “no waste” principle.
- They source eco-electricity and manage all resources with environmental care.
- Weekly food donations are made to Die Tafel Frankfurt, a local food bank.
Reducing Event Waste
To minimise our environmental footprint, ICMA will not be printing programmes or distributing delegate bags. Instead, all event information will be accessible via the ICMA Conference App and through digital signage throughout the venue.
This year’s ICMA AGM and Conference delegate badges are made from recycled paper and tomato seeds. Participants are encouraged to take them home and plant them after the event.
Join Us in Making a Difference
We invite all delegates to support these efforts by making conscious travel decisions, embracing digital resources, and engaging with our venues’ sustainability values.
