Zermatt overview
Resort
Located in the canton of Valais in south-western Switzerland, close to the Italian border, Zermatt lies at the head of the Matter Valley at an altitude of around 1,600 metres. The village sits beneath the Matterhorn and is surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the Alps, making it one of Switzerland’s best-known mountain destinations.
Zermatt has a long association with mountaineering and winter sports, dating back to the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Today, it offers an extensive high-altitude ski area, with connections to Cervinia in Italy, as well as a wide range of hotels, restaurants and other facilities for visitors.
The village is largely free from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, with electric vehicles used for most local transport. Zermatt is accessible by rail, with visitors typically travelling via Visp or Täsch, and its compact centre means that hotels, restaurants and ski facilities are generally within easy reach.
With its established tourism infrastructure, extensive winter sports facilities and distinctive Alpine setting, Zermatt provides the setting for the ICMA Switzerland and Liechtenstein Region’s Winter Event 2027.
Zermatt - the ''Mountain Mecca'' has...
- 29 mountains soaring over 4000m (13,100ft)
- nine of the ten highest mountains in Europe
- the highest (ski) lift in Europe - Klein Matterhorn (Gobba di Rollin) 3899m (12,830ft)
- the largest summer skiing area in the Alps (all year 9 ski lifts / 25 km runs)
- the longest winter skiing season in Europe (late November to early May)
- the longest consistently open ski run in Europe (Klein Matterhorn to Zermatt 13 km)
