A collaboration of industry and academia
In 1991, the International Capital Market Association (ICMA) embarked on what has become a tremendously successful venture in the field of financial markets education. The Association sponsored a professorship in investment banking at the University of Reading
in the UK, which led to the creation of the ICMA Centre
. Today, the Centre is known for its undergraduate
and Executive Education
in Financial Markets.
Since its creation, the ICMA Centre has grown to become one of the world's major centres of academic excellence in the study of financial markets. The Centre's first postgraduate programme, MSc International Securities, Investment and Banking is ranked amongst the best postgraduate finance courses by the Financial Times. The Centre has a range of industry-specialised masters degrees, including:
A highly successful undergraduate programme has been running since October 1997, now called BSc Finance.
Established in 1991 with funding from ICMA, the Centre is housed in a purpose-built building with excellent facilities, including three dealing rooms supported by Thomson Reuters and Bloomberg. The technology and facilities allow students to put theory into practice.
The Centre was the first business school in Europe to have a dealing room facility of its kind and is still the only university with a facility on such a scale.
The dealing rooms are equipped with 90 Thomson Reuters and 20 Bloomberg Terminals. As part of the Centre's practice-centred teaching and learning approach, students utilise the information available through these terminals in order to work on projects that aim to build their financial analysis skills and impprove their market awareness. The tools available through such financial databases are also employed in the classroom to enhance the learning experience as part of a teaching approach adapted to the needs of the competitive financial marketplace.
The graduate and postgraduate courses on offer at the Centre have been designed with financial careers firmly in mind and provide an academically rigorous programme of education combined with financial training delivered by recognised industry practitioners, academics and consultants.
Executive Education for Alumni
From 2017 ICMA and the ICMA Centre are offering alumni from the Bachelors and Masters courses at ICMA Centre and the University of Reading a discount equivalent to the 30% received by member firms in the Executive Education courses.
